Orca Corca

In the hot Hawke’s Bay summer of 1991, Ollie, his brother Hugo, and a group of friends all went surfing at Stingray Bay.

Waiting for the next big wave they noticed two large fins popping out of the water. Within minutes an orca and its calf surfaced in front of them and dived underneath them all. The moment was etched in time and the story often retold.

Thirty odd years later, Hugo sent a text to Ollie proposing a new wine label called Orca Corca. Everyone loved the name and Hugo sketched an orca and logo for the label. The orca experience was coming to life…

Taking inspiration from a recent family trip to Italy, and with the grape harvest underway, Ollie created three organic wines made from exceptional Hawkes Bay fruit. Family and friends helped to hand harvest and the grapes were then pressed and wild fermented in old oak barrels. The fermenting juices expressed incredible aromas and flavours early on and with time in oak and ‘sur lie’ have developed into wonderful, expressive wines.
